Be Inspection-Ready: Ongoing Preparation for a School Safeguarding Inspection

designated safeguarding lead dsl education graffham global kcsie mats safeguarding safer recruitment school leadership training Oct 20, 2025

Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of pupils is central to every school inspection.

Inspectors want to see that Safeguarding is understood, embedded, and actively led across your organisation, not just written in a policy.

Here’s a short checklist to help your school stay confident and inspection-ready all year round:

✅ 1. Stay Fully Up to Date

  • Review Keeping Children Safe in Education (the latest KCSIE) and Working Together to Safeguard Children.

  • Ensure all staff understand the latest guidance and their responsibilities.

  • Keep policies current and aligned with your local safeguarding partnership’s procedures.

✅ 2. Review Policies and Procedures

  • Safeguarding policy reviewed at least annually and approved by governors and proprietors.

  • Policy published on your website and linked to related policies (online safety, whistleblowing, safer recruitment).

  • Every member of staff knows what to do if they have a concern.

✅ 3. Keep Training Up to Date

  • All staff receive regular safeguarding training with ongoing updates.

  • Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSLs) complete Level 3 training at least every two years.

  • DSLs must also keep their knowledge and skills up to date, including staying informed of changes in KCSIE and local safeguarding guidance.

  • Have Deputy DSLs trained and ready, so safeguarding cover is maintained when the main DSL is unavailable.

  • Keep accurate training records and certificates in a central log.

✅ 4. Check Safer Recruitment and the Single Central Record

  • Ensure your Single Central Record (SCR) is complete and accurate.

  • Confirm all pre-employment checks: DBS, references, ID, right-to-work, qualifications.

  • Every interview panel should include at least one person with Safer Recruitment training.

✅ 5. Strengthen Your Safeguarding Culture

  • Staff feel confident to raise concerns and know the reporting process.

  • Leaders act swiftly and record actions clearly.

  • Regular DSL supervision and safeguarding meetings demonstrate proactive leadership.
